- 1: Poor, or Cull (Seen as Poor-1) Extremely damaged* or worn yet able to be positively identified.
- 2: Fair (Seen as Fair-2) Heavily damaged* or worn, yet some details and lettering remain.
- 3: About Good (Seen as AG-3) Very worn, but more details and design are present than with lower grades.
- 4 to 6: Good (G-4, G-5, or G-6) Well worn, yet some of the date, wording and design remain on the coin.
- 7 to 10: Very Good (VG-7, VG-8, VG-10, never VG-9) Complete rims, slight design detailing within the design outlining , and some lettering all appear on Very Good coins.
- 11 to 19: Fine (Most commonly F-12 or F-15) Still quite worn and damaged,* though all lettering should be prominent, with about half of the design.
- 20 to 39: Very Fine (Most Commonly VF-20, VF-25, VF-30, or VF-35) A Very Fine coin is lightly circulated, with roughly two-thirds of the design remaining.
- 40 to 49: Extremely Fine (Most commonly EF-40 and EF-45 or XF-40 and XF-45) The Extremely Fine category begins the classification of nice coins you should look to get in your collection. Some luster is visible, and wear can only be found on the high points of the design.
- 50 to 59: About Uncirculated ( Most commonly AU-50, AU-53, AU-55, and AU-58) An About Uncirculated coin was fortunate enough to escape most of the harms that damage coins, and has the appearance of an Uncirculated coin.
- 60 to 70: Uncirculated, seen as MS-60 - MS-70 [MS=Mint State] Uncirculated coins have seen little or no circulation and appear similar to the way they looked on the day they were struck. This grade has subcategories such as:
- 60 to 62: Average Uncirculated (MS-60, MS-61, MS-62)
- MS-63: Choice Uncirculated
- MS-64: Select Uncirculated
- MS-65 and MS-66: Gem Uncirculated or Brilliant Uncirculated (MS-65 and MS-66, or BU-65 and BU-66)
- 67-69: Gem Superb Uncirculated (MS-67, MS-68, and MS-69)
- MS-70: Perfect Uncirculated
