Status: Discontinued
Years: 1796-1929
In 1796, in the early years of gold coinage, the Mint began making $2.50 gold pieces, or quarter eagles. Compared to other denominations of U.S. gold coins, the Quarter Eagle (named so because it was a quarter of the Eagle, the base of U.S. gold coinage with a face value of $10) was minted in small quantities. The first Quarter Eagles bore the Turban Head design from 1796 to 1807, followed by the Capped Bust, Classic Head, Liberty Head, and Indian Head designs.
