In Colonial times, the most important coin was the Spanish Eight Reales. Worth one Dollar, this coin was often chopped up into eight pieces, each worth 12.5¢. (This is where the term "Pieces of Eight" comes from!) But as soon as the U.S. became an independent country, it wanted to mint it's own coins. So in 1796, four years after establishing the U.S. Mint, America minted the first Quarter Dollar to replace the two bits. Quarter Dollars feature the following six designs: Draped Bust, Capped Bust, Seated Liberty, Barber, Standing Liberty, and Washington Head.
