In 1851, the U.S. Mint designed a coin solely for the purpose of buying stamps, which at the time cost 3¢. 3¢ Silvers come in 3 subtypes: 1. Star on obverse, no olive sprig on reverse, 2. Star with double outline on obverse, olive sprig on reverse, and 3. Star with single outline on obverse, olive sprig on reverse.
