From 1854 to 1859, the U.S. Mint struck a $3 Gold Piece. Though nobody knows exactly why they did so, it is theorized that they did so to make it easier to buy stamps. You see, back then, stamps cost 3¢, and you could either buy 1 stamp for 3¢, or you could buy a sheet of 100 for $3. The $3 coin made it easier to buy the sheet of 100.
